Background

Scope and content:

The strongest aspect of this collection is the personal histories documented in the large scrapbook with over 130 pages of detailed note-taking and photographs. The rest of the collection is a scattered account of the Club de Damas. There are some administrative materials like contact sheets and program applications. In addition, the collection includes an in-depth series with reporting from local news outlets. The miscellaneous correspondence is quite anecdotal and deals with small financial exchanges.

Biographical / historical:

Club de Damas (Ladies’ Club) was an informal congregation of women in the Pomona Valley who worked to improve racial and gendered community relations. Primarily comprised of white and Mexican women, the Club de Damas met at the American Legion Building where they would organize fundraisers, host open forums, and publish demands for policy reform.
