Abstract: Baldo Loy worked for the Pacific
Steamship Association as a Stevedore in 1923 and for the Moore Drydock Company in 1924. By
1935, he was a member of the Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America,
Local 9. He was "granted Honorable, withdrawel [sic] from this Local" on 26 January 1936.
That same year, at the age of 36, he was issued a picket card by the Maritime Federation of
the Pacific coast, serving the organization faithfully during the Maritime Federation
Pacific Coast strike. The collection consists of picket cards and other forms of
identification relating to Baldo Loy's union affiliations.

Baldo Loy International Longshoremen's and Warehouse Union (ILWU)

n documents Baldo Loy's various union affiliations from 1924 to
1977 when he worked as a stevedore in San Pedro. The collection consists predominantly of
cards issued by various longshoreman and maritime unions including the International
Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU), the Committee for Maritime Unity (CMU), the
Industrial Union of Marine and Shipbuilding Workers of America (IUMSW), the Maritime
Federation of the Pacific Coast, and the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA).
Items include picket cards, working cards, identification cards, attendance records,
membership books, a traveling card, a registration badge, and a document confirming Loy's
honorable withdrawal from the IUMSW. These items serve to document proof of employment,
various transfers, attendance at union meetings, attendance at picketing events, and
distribution of meal tickets as well as the payment of fines, strike funds, burial funds,
and monthly union dues. Some of the membership books also include parts or entire
reproductions of their union constitutions. Files are arranged alphabetically by title.
