Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection contains 59 audio cassettes with recordings of approximately 75 of Tuchman's interviews with leading artists such as Carl Andre, Anthony Caro, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Philip Glass, Michael Heizer, Donald Judd, Roy Lichtenstein, John McCracken, Joan Mitchell, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela, among others. The interviews were conducted primarily for publication in Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, and other publications. Because Tuchman typically edited extensively for publication, the audio recordings often differ substantially from the published interviews. Her editing process is demonstrated by several annotated transcripts in the collection, including multiple versions of some. The transcribed interviews are with Carl Andre, Anthony Caro, John Chamberlain, Herbert Ferber, Larry Poons, George Segal, Jack Tworkov and Richard Van Buren. Some of the transcripts are annotated by the artists themselves. Also included are transcripts, drafts and other material related to Tuchman's article, "Pop! Interviews with George Segal, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and Robert Indiana," ARTnews (May 1974).
- Biographical / historical:

In many cases, such as the interviews with Carl Andre and Anthony Caro, these texts have become canonical, oft-cited references for the artists.
