Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of three manuscripts written by Malcolm F. Farmer, frequent contributor to The Masterkey. The first, "Notes on the Place of the Malaga Cove Site in Southern California Archaeology," discusses the people that have lived there, including the Chumash, Shoshoneans, Luiseno, and Juianeno Indians. It also discusses artifacts found in that area through the numerous archaeology excavations. The manuscript includes a bibliography and a map, and is dated June 1937. The second article, "An Indian Camp-Site in Tuna Canon," describes a camp site in Tuna Canon ten miles northwest of Santa Monica. It describes six bedrock mortars found, arrowheads found, scrapers, and other artifacts. There are two copies of this article, one of which is a preliminary draft with many hand-written editing marks and comments, some of which belong to Southwest Museum director Frederick Webb Hodge. The third manuscript is a short note describing the cashew nut, where it is found and some of its uses. This sheet includes a pencil drawing of the cashew nut and is dated June 1937.
