Background

Scope and content:

The addenda consists of correspondence between Elizabeth Boynton Harbert, William S. Harbert, and others. It also includes some manuscripts and drafts, materials related to the Harbert family (including letters to and from Arthur B. Harbert and Corinne B. Harbert), and miscellaneous newspaper clippings, ephemera, and a scrapbook. Of note is the Civil War era letters and telegrams between Elizabeth Boynton Harbert and William S. Harbert (1861-1865).

Subjects include: Harbert family, American Civil War, suffrage, women's rights, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Correspondents also include: Carrie Chapman Catt and Susan B. Anthony.

Biographical / historical:

Elizabeth Morrison Boynton Harbert, a feminist, suffragist, author and lecturer, was active from an early age in support of the rights of women to vote and to obtain a higher education. She served for twelve years as president of the Illinois Woman Suffrage Association, corresponded extensively with other prominent feminist leaders, wrote pamphlets and books, and was active in numerous women's, political, religious and philanthropic organizations. In 1870 she married lawyer William Soesbe Harbert. They had three children: Arthur Boynton (d.1900), Corinne Boynton, and Elizabeth Harbert Rowe. The Harberts relocated to Pasadena, California later in their lives and Elizabeth died there in 1925.
