Background

Scope and content:

The Harriet Press Freeman collection on the Freeman House contains correspondence, photographs, official documents, and other material primarily relating to the Freeman House in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California. The Freeman House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1923 for Samuel and Harriet Press Freeman. The Freeman family lived in the house until Harriet Freeman's death in 1986, when she bequeathed the house to the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Harriet Freeman assembled this collection and most likely donated it to USC around the same time that she bequeathed the Freeman House to the university. In 2009, Amy Rutherford created a detailed, but incomplete inventory of the collection for the USC Architecture and Fine Arts Library. A scan of the 2009 inventory is publicly accessible via the USC Digital Library. Aside from the material directly related to the Freeman House, the collection also holds some of the Freemans' personal documents, including passports, birth certificates, a training school certificate, and a marriage license. Some of the photographs and drawings in the collection show furniture in the Freeman House designed by R. M. Schindler (1887-1953).

Acquisition information:
The USC Libraries Architecture Fine Arts Library transferred this collection to Special Collections on December 5, 2024. The date and source of the Architecture Fine Arts Library's acquisition of the material is unknown.
Processing information:

Amy Rutherford created a detailed, but incomplete inventory of the Harriet Press Freeman collection in 2009 for the USC Architecture and Fine Arts Library. A scan of the 2009 inventory is publicly accessible via the USC Digital Library. The inventory lists the collection's contents as they were physically arranged in boxes in 2009. The physical arrangement of the items described in the 2009 inventory is no longer accurate. The collection also includes materials housed in a box labeled "uncataloged photos" that are not documented in the 2009 inventory.
