Biographical Note
Harry Lorenzo Gilchrist (1870-1943) was a United States Army officer and surgeon. His military career began in 1898 as a U.S.
Army contract surgeon. While in the Army Medical Corps, he served during epidemics in the Philippines, Central America, and
Cuba. During World War I, Gilchrist was promoted to lieutenant colonel and served in Europe. After the war, Gilchrist did
significant anti-typhus work in Poland. At his retirement in 1934, he was chief of the Army's Chemical Warfare Service.
Scope and Content of Collection
Includes biographical material, including correspondence and photographs, relating to the career of Harry L. Gilchrist. Topics
of the materials also include chemical warfare during World War I and conditions in Poland and Russia after the war.
