Scope and content:

Two volumes of minutes of the meetings of the San Jose Music Study Club for 1921 to 1927. Includes membership lists and several programs.

Biographical / historical:

According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, published April 12, 2010, the San Jose Music Study Club was founded in 1918 by a group of residents who included a singer, choir director and instrumentalists. β€œIt was formed for women to learn more about all aspects of classical music and to help the community learn more about good music,” according to a member quoted in the article. The club originally required that two-thirds of its members be performing musicians, but later relaxed that rule.

Acquisition information:
Donated to the San Jose Historical Museum in 1986 by Marshall Freeman, whose wife Jeanne Bronson may have been a member of the club in the 1930s.
