Scope and content:

Papers of Dr. Gumbach contain correspondence, lectures, speeches, typescripts, notes, data, photographs, and slides relating to Dr. Grumbach pediatric endocrinology research, in particular the effect of hormones and the central nervous system on growth and puberty and their disorders; the function of the human sex chromosomes; and disorders of sexual development. Included are materials documenting his participation in various organizations and advisory boards. The following planning materials are included: establishment of the Mental Retardation Center at Langley Porter Institute, academic plan for the UCSF campus (1962-1966), Moffitt Hospital modernization plans (1970-1973), Children's Hospital development plans (1967-1975), Children's Medical Center development plans, and reviews of the Department of Pediatrics (1966-1985).

Biographical / historical:

Dr. Grumbach is a pediatrician and professor, specializing in pediatric endocrinology. Grumbach has been at University of California, San Francisco since 1966. He's served as chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for over 20 years and was named the Edward B. Shaw Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Emeritus at UCSF in 1983.
