Background

Scope and content:

The collection primarily contains jazz performances in audio and video formats from the personal collection of Siegfried H. Mohr, a jazz correspondent. The genres include ragtime, stride, New Orleans style, swing, bebop, and modern jazz, with an emphasis on piano performance. The collection includes studio-recorded and live jazz music performances, field recordings, off-the-air radio broadcasts, and dubbings of pre-recorded radio broadcasts or commercial disc recordings. Performance venues include locations in France, Germany, Norway, and the United States. In many cases, the sources and dates of the original recordings remain unidentified.

Biographical / historical:

Siegfried H. Mohr, a mechanical and optical engineer by profession, was born in Germany in 1930 and emigrated to the United States in 1958. His interest in jazz led to lifelong participation as correspondent and contributing author to European jazz periodicals such as 'Bulletin du Hot Club de France' and 'Le jazz hot'. In one notable assignment for 'Le jazz hot' during the 1970s, Mohr interviewed jazz piano legend Earl 'Fatha' Hines. Mohr contributed to the book, 'Superstride, Playing Jazz in All the Keys: A Biography and Discography of Johnny Guarnieri,' by Derek Coller (Jazzology Press, 2019).
