Scope and content:

The collection contains research and professional materials compiled and produced by William Freudenburg throughout his career. The materials mostly cover his field work and research, his participation in professional organizations and conferences, and his published reports and work.

Materials may include field notes and final reports, research proposals and administrative documents, professional organization meeting materials, conference materials, drafts and reprints, reference materials, and correspondence.

Biographical / historical:

Dr. William Robert (Bill) Freudenburg, (2 November 1951 – 28 December 2010) was an environmental sociologist and social theorist, best known for his work in rural sociology on the topics of risk perception, social disruption, and the causes of environmental degradation. Born and raised in Nebraska, he earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Nebraska before going on to earn both his Master's and PhD at Yale University.

Before being named the Dehlsen Professor of Environmental Studies and Sociology at UCSB in 2002, Dr. Freudenburg began as an assistant professor at Washington State University in 1978, served as a Congressional Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives, lectured as a visiting associate professor at the University of Denver, and taught as professor of Rural Sociology and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

He authored and contributed to three important books on oil exploration and production, "Blowout in the Gulf –– The BP Oil Spill Disaster and the Future of Energy in America;" "Catastrophe in the Making: The Engineering of Katrina and the Disasters of Tomorrow;" and "Oil in Troubled Waters: Perceptions, Politics, and the Battle Over Offshore Drilling."

Throughout his career, Dr. Freudenburg was honored with many awards and served on the committees and boards of numberous professional organizations. He held official positions and received several awards with the Rural Sociology Society; the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences, an organization he also helped found; the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the American Sociological Association; the Council on Agricultural Science and Technology; the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council; the Risk Analysis and Policy Association; the U.S. Department of Energy's Environmental Management Advisory Committee; and he was the President-Elect of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS).
