The collection consists of 161 letters by William Harrison Ainsworth, correspondence of individuals associated with Ainsworth, and 20 letters from his biographer, Stewart Marsh Ellis, to collector Adrian Hoffman Joline.

Biographical / historical:

William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) was an English journalist and historical novelist who wrote 39 novels throughout his career.

Transferred from Rare Books Department, Huntington Library, 1972.
Custodial history:

This collection of letters was formerly in the library of collector Adrian Hoffman Joline, and the letters were kept in Stewart Marsh Ellis's book, William Harrison Ainsworth and His Friends, Huntington rare book 111109.

Processing information:

The letters were removed by Huntington Library staff and processed by Alan Jutzi in June 1972; in June 2024, Gayle M. Richardson created the finding aid.
