The collection consists primarily of court documents collected by the Daily News, as well as newspaper clippings from the Daily News and Los Angeles Times.

Scope and content:

The 'Daily News' Morgue Files of the Bustop Campaign Collection contains the morgue files of the Daily News and documents the newspaper coverage and research on the Bustop Campaign. The Bustop Campaign was originally organized in March 1976, by San Fernando Valley parents opposed to forced busing to achieve school integration. The primary purpose of the campaign was to stop Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) from busing students from and to the San Fernando Valley. Files primarily include court documents collected by the Daily News, as well as newspaper clippings from the Daily News and Los Angeles Times. The collection is organized in four series: Bustop in the Courts (1977-1981), Integration Plan Research Files (1928-1981), Newspaper Clipping Files (1962-1981), and Non-Manuscript Material (1979).

Series I, Bustop in the Courts, is divided into three subseries: Records of the Superior Court for the State of California (1977-1980), Records of the California Court of Appeals (1977-1981), and Records of the California Supreme Court (1978-1981). Each subseries contains correspondence, court documents, exhibits, minutes, reports, resumes, statements and related records which document Bustop's role as interveners in Crawford vs. Board of Education. Files are arranged in chronological order within each of the court cases.

Series II, Integration Plan Research Files, contains bus route sheets, correspondence, early court decisions, desegregation plans, enrollment statistics, racial and ethnic surveys, and related evidential material. Much of the materials are copies of documents created by LAUSD as it prepared plans and proposals for the court. The files are arranged in alphabetical order by subject.

Series III, Newspaper Clipping Files, contains clippings from the Daily News and Los Angeles Times focusing on the major issues surrounding the busing controversy, and involved personalities. Included in this series are newspaper clippings pertaining to the anti-busing campaign, court rulings on busing, and integration plans regarding teachers. The clippings are arranged in alphabetical order and are chronological within each subject heading.

Series IV, Non-Manuscript Materials, includes oversized maps of school locations, area boundaries, and resident enrollment. Photographs are also contained in this series.
