- Biographical / historical:
-
Aukje Kapteyn Bertea (1916-2001) was born in East Northfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. From ages one to four, her family lived in West Africa as her parents were Presbyterian missionaries. They returned to the states when Aukje was five. Her early education took place in California, including Los Gatos, Mayfield, Victorville and finally Los Angeles.
Aukje majored in Chemistry at UCLA before switching to pre-nursing, she completed her nurses training at the UC Training School for Nurses in San Francisco and received her BS in Nursing and California RN Certificate from UCSF. Aukje worked as a hospital nurse until she saved enough to do what she really wanted to do, Public Health Nursing. She took a PHN course at UC Berkeley and completed PHN fieldwork at the San Luis Obispo County Health Department, earning herself a Public Health Nursing Certificate. She worked for the California State Health Department as a Public Health Nursing under the Maternal and Child Hygiene Program in San Diego; the Los Angeles County Health Department in Whittier in a generalized Public Health Nursing program.
Aukje was married in 1942 and had three children, her first died during childbirth. She was a very active parent in Virginia Swanson Kei's Nursery School Group under the Montebello Adult Education Department. Aukje devoted a lot of work to the Montebello Adult School Parent-Child Study Group, she believed that healthy parenting led to the development of children into psychologically balanced adults. Mental health was important to Aukje, it was something her mother and later herself struggled with. She was also active in her children's cub scout and camp groups, writing news articles for local publications, putting together events and composing campfire sings for the groups. Aukje kept her PHN credentials active until age 65, much of her PHN work was done as a volunteer.
