Scope and content:

This collection includes Mullen’s research files, notes, and correspondence about the San Francisco Police Department, and also includes material generated by the Police Department. The earliest original material is San Francisco newspaper clippings relating to the Frank Egan case, 1932, and the latest is a Performance Executive Research Forum (PERF) report, 2008. In Mullen’s research files, Subject and Biographical files include photocopies of newspaper articles, many dating from the 19th century. Original newsprint clippings date roughly 1980-2008. Series include: SFPD Murder Books; SFPD Management Surveys and Reports; SFPD Annual Reports; After Action Reports; Assorted Manuals; Alpha Bios; Subject Files Alpha; Police Chrono; Frank Egan case.

Biographical / historical:

Kevin J. Mullen was born in San Francisco in 1935 and joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1959. He rose through the ranks and worked as head of Field Operations at the time of the 1979 White Night riots. He retired in 1986 as deputy chief. Following retirement, he published several books about the history of policing and crime in San Francisco. He died in Novato, California in 2011.

Open for research. The collection is offsite and advance notice is required for retrieval. Material must be requested at least 4 business days in advance of visit. The collection is available for use during San Francisco History Center hours. Photographs are available during Photo Desk hours.
