Background
- Scope and content:
-
Papers of gay attorney and activist Richard "Dick" Gayer. The bulk of the collection consists of legal briefs and decisions, dating from the 1970s to the 1990s, related to federal security clearance and sexual orientation. Also included are materials documenting Gayerโs efforts to secure the inclusion of Gay Guns/Minutepersons, a gay firearms group, in the 1982 International Lesbian & Gay Freedom Day Parade; as well as materials related to Gayer's case against the California DMV over its denial of his proposed license plate reading "GAYLIB." These materials were recovered from the garbage. According to the collection donor, Gayer โleft his house to a church and they just threw everything into the alley, where I took some of it.โ
