    Abstract: Hovden Food Products Corporation was founded by Knut Hovden in 1916 and continued until 1973 in Monterey. Hovden also initiated another plant at Moss Landing. In 1951 Knub Hovden retired. Hopkins Marine Station purchased the facility in 1967 with Wilbur-Ellis Corporation of San Francisco operating the cannery under the name of Portola Packing company until Wilbur-Ellis closed the plant in 1973. Hovden Food Products diversified from primarily sardine processing to processing other fish and squid. It became the largest and longest-running cannery operating on Ocean View (the famed Cannery Row).

    Transferred from the Maritime and History museum of Monterey in 2016.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    Organized by series and arranged by subject in folders, then chronologically by item. Collection contains three series: I. Document Files, including staff rosters, forms, invoices, work notices, 1941 to 1950, as well as Hovden publictions and Portola brand can labels; II. Account Ledgers, including bound financial invoices and statement, 1957-1963, and inspection trust fund records, 1957-1981; III. Oversized Ephemera, containing employee wages and work poster, signs, and advertisement from 1940s-1950s.
