Description
Hovden Food Products Corporation was founded by Knut Hovden in 1916 and continued until 1973 in Monterey. Hovden also initiated
another plant at Moss Landing. In 1951 Knub Hovden retired. Hopkins Marine Station purchased the facility in 1967 with Wilbur-Ellis
Corporation of San Francisco operating the cannery under the name of Portola Packing company until Wilbur-Ellis closed the
plant in 1973. Hovden Food Products diversified from primarily sardine processing to processing other fish and squid. It became
the largest and longest-running cannery operating on Ocean View (the famed Cannery Row).
