Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists primarily of letters and a few documents related to the activities of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the attempt to pass a constitutional amendment legalizing woman suffrage, and the general philosophy of the suffragist movement. There is also a 333-page scrapbook containing clippings from the Woman's Tribune from 1883 to 1891. Significant persons represented in the collection include Susan B. Anthony, Olympia Brown, James Gowdy Clark, Isabella Beecher Hooker, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Biographical / historical:

Clara Dorothy Bewick Colby (1846-1916) was an early and active member of the woman suffrage movement. She served as president of the Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association and edited the influential feminist newspaper, Woman's Tribune. In her later years she was active as a lecturer in the international suffrage movement.

Custodial history:

This collection forms part of the Susan B. Anthony Memorial collections, which were started by a group of California women who collected all types of material about the life and work of Susan B. Anthony. This group, the Susan B. Anthony Memorial Committee of California, was headed by Una Richardson Winter, Director, and Alice L. Park, Associate Director. They donated the manuscript and printed materials now known as the Susan B. Anthony Memorial collections to the Huntington Library between 1945 and 1956.
