Background

Salvatore Pablo Lucia, M.D., was born in San Francisco on March 9, 1901. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and received his medical degree from the UC School of Medicine in San Francisco in 1930, where he remained for most of his career.
He created the department of preventive medicine and epidemiolgy at UCSF and was its chairman for 27 years.
Dr. Lucia was interested in wine as a dietary beverage and as medicine. He was chairman of the first symposium on Wine and Health and wrote several books on this subject.
When Dr. Lucia retired from UCSF in 1971, he became the medical research director for the California Wine Advisory Board of the state Department of Agriculture. He also served as president of the Pan American Medical Association and a member of the American Geriatric Society and of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, the international wine organization.

This collection was donated to the UCSF Archives and Special Collections by Marilyn Reed Lucia, MD, in 1987.

Collection is open for research.
The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level.
