Background
- Scope and content:
-
Records (newspaper clippings, photographs, graduation ceremony invitations, diploma, RN licenses) and uniform (nursing cape and cap) of Margaret Borzini, a 1938 alumna of the Saint Mary's Hospital nursing school in San Francisco.
- Biographical / historical:
-
Margaret Borzini attended Saint Mary's Hospital nursing school in the mid 1930s. Saint Mary's Hospital is the oldest continuously operating hospital in San Francisco. In 1854, San Francisco Archbishop solicited the Ireland-based Sisters of Mercy to provide care at the County hospital. The city failed to reimburse the sisters for their service and in 1857 they established Saint Mary's Hospital, now Saint Mary's Medical Center-the first Catholic Hospital in San Francisco. The University of California, San Francisco acquired Saint Mary's Medical Center and its sister hospital Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in 2024.
