Scope and content:: This collection includes documentary material collected by Engine 557 Restoration Company during their restoration of Alaska Railroad locomotive No. 557 which is part of class S-160. This material has been collected on a compact disk and includes: drawings, engineering notes, parts manuals, photographs, two articles, specifications, and drawing indexes from the California State Railroad Museum, Pennsylvania State Archives and Allen County Historical Society pertaining to the S-160 locomotive. Additional written notes explain the history and the scope of the restoration project.
Biographical / historical:: The S-160 locomotive was designed as a collaborative effort by Lima Locomotive Works, American Locomotive Company and Baldwin Locomotive Company. The S-160 class Consolidation 2-8-0 locomotives were built for the United States Army Transportation Corps (USATC). between 1942 and 1945, became the largest single class of locomotives ever built in America. The Engine 557 Restoration Company was founded in 2012 to restore Alaska Railroad locomotive No. 557, an example of the S-160 locomotive. As of May 2024, restoration is still ongoing.
