    Scope and Contents

A collection of 49 cartes de visite or photographic portraits of various European medical scientists and physicians active during the second half of the 19th century, assembled by an unidentified former owner and housed in a commercially-produced contemporary blank album, re-bound in brown calf over boards. The photographs originate from a number of different photography studios, including: Atelier-Langhans (Prague), C. Brasch (Berlin), Chalot (Paris), Ernst Enke (Berlin), Adolf Halwas (Berlin), A. Liébert (Paris), Fritz Leyde and Co. (Berlin), Loesche and Petsch (Berlin), J. Löwy (Vienna), Fritz Luckhardt (Vienna), Pierre Petit (Paris), Ch. Reutlinger (Paris), and Julius Schaarwächer (Berlin). Most of the portraits have handwritten surnames written in pen or pencil on the paper frame; some are dated in blindstamp on the photograph or printed on verso, or both (although printed dates typically are two to six years later than blindstamped ones). Portraits include: Jean Charcot (no date), Louis Pasteur (no date), Péay (no date), Cardieu (no date), [Nelaton?] (1889), Alfred Velpeau (1882), Armand Trousseau (1881), Alfred Fournier (no date), Karl Heinrich von Bardeleben (1886 and 1890), Koch (1888), Ernst Leyden (1890), Emil du Bois-Reymond (1890 and 1889), Sinalov (1884), Christian Bilroth (1889), Edward Hennoch (1889), Lazarus (1888), Friedrich von Esmarch (1886), Hermann von Helmholtz (1890), Rudolph Ludwig Karl Virchow (1886), V.
