Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains photographs, negatives, and slides taken of people, places, and events related to George Pepperdine College and Pepperdine University, in California and abroad. Items range in date from 1937 to 2008. The bulk of the collection is comprised of 1,744 topical photographic files (which also occasionally include slides and negatives) housed in file cabinets which contain approximately 50,000 photographs. Also included in the collection are 13 boxes of negatives, one box of oversized photographs, and 7 boxes of slides. Representative topics include (but are not limited to): commencements, visiting speakers, Pepperdine University Bible Lectures, luncheons, building dedications, presidential inaugurations, athletic events, musicals and plays, faculty and staff appreciation events, Board of Regents meetings, memorials and funerals, church events, students and student life events, campus buildings and aerial views of campus, trips abroad and international campuses, and many other topics. Related Archival Materials: Almost every collection held in the University Archives contains photographs of events, people related to Pepperdine University, places on campus, and other topics. It is possible that items are split between individual collections and this collection (Pepperdine University Archives Photographs, Negatives, and Slides). For instance, there are many photographs of commencements in the Pepperdine University Commencements records, but files also exist in this collection. Photographs from the files numbered 1 through 1,744 are being systematically digitized and added to the Pepperdine Digital Collections, in the University Archives Photograph Collection (http://pepperdine.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/).

Biographical / historical:

Photographs in the collection were taken, collected, and donated by many individuals over the years. A large number of photographs were taken by University Photographer Ron Hall (class of '79), who has worked at Pepperdine University since 1980.

Acquisition information:
Materials were collected from University Archives files. Processing information: Photographic files were arranged and described at the folder and item level by James Smythe, completed in 2002 and 2003. The collection contents were summarized and described for the finding aid by Jamie Henricks in January, 2013.
