    Biography

    Douglas W. Sprague graduated from the University of Southern California in 1971. During his college years, he worked at the Rock Products Industry, and subsequently, as operations manager for the Pacific Rock & Gravel Company in Irwindale, California. He later worked for Pryor-Giggey Company, a small refractory manufacturing company as a production manager.
    Sprague was asked to serve on the California State Mining and Geology Board, which was recently reorganized by the Surface Mining & Reclamation Act of 1975 (SMARA). He was a member and executive officer of the board from 1976 through 1985.
    From 1985 through [2002?], Sprague worked for CalMat, Inc., which was later acquired by Vulcan Materials Company in 1999. He was the manager of special projects and reclamation.
    During his free time, Sprague enjoys wildcatting the northern North Sea on a Global Marine floater.

    Scope and Content

    The first series consists of material related to Douglas W. Sprague’s tenure as a member and executive officer of the California State Mining and Geology Board from 1976 through 1985.
    The second series consists of material related to the sand and gravel industry in California; mined land reclamation projects; and California Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1975. Also included are memorandums of Sprague’s activity summaries from his career at CalMat, Inc. and Vulcans Material Company.
