Background

Scope and content:

The cinema posters were originally gathered by Jonas Mekas, a Lithuanian-born filmmaker and journalist. The posters focus on queer cinema and experimental cinema, and feature film screenings at institutions that were founded by Jonas Mekas, such as the Film-Makers' Cinematheque and Anthology Film Archives.

Included in the collection are posters relating to pioneers of queer male cinema such as Kenneth Anger, Gregory Markopoulos, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol. Other posters relate more broadly to experimental cinema and feature screenings of films by Robert Frank, Peter Kubelka, and Paul Sharits.

Films represented in this collection were banned or subjected to censorship because of legal descrimination against homosexuals.

Provenance Note: Formerly in the collection of Jonas Mekas. Acquired by Rheinhold Brown Gallery from a private collector. Acquired in 2014 from the Rheinhold Brown Gallery by Merrill C. Berman.
