Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, oral history audiotapes and transcripts, and other research materials relating to the history of wine and wineries in Southern California, particularly in the areas of Temecula and Rancho Cucamonga. There are drafts of Heintz's book, Temecula: A Grape and Wine History and research materials relating to the book, including photocopies of articles from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Heintz also conducted research for a petition to designate a viticultural area named "Temecula."

The oral history interviews that Heintz conducted address wine and viticultural history in Southern California, particularly in the Temecula area. For example, Philo Biane, the former president of Brookside Winery in Guasti, discusses the Italian Vineyard Company and the concept behind Fruit Industries, which made grape concentrate during Prohibition. Several interviews also address the historical vineyards in the Temecula area.
