The newspaper clippings are about the CITY OF PEKING (passenger vessel) and the battleship BENNINGTON. Scope and content:

The Captain John Leale autograph books (SAFR 14027, HDC 112) collection is comprised of two volumes created between 1910-1963. Volume one covers the years between 1910-1939 and volume two 1939-1963. They list the names of passengers and military officers, contain short entries, addresses, newspaper clippings and letters from shipbuilders. The newspaper clippings are about the CITY OF PEKING (passenger vessel) and the battleship BENNINGTON. This collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.

Names of note that appear in the volumes include John McLaren, Superintendent of Golden Gate Park from 1887 to 1943, members of the Ghiradelli family, painter W.A. Coulter, Captain Fred Klebingat and Karl and Jean Kortum.

Biographical / historical:

Captain John Leale was born in 1850 in Guernsey. He came to San Francisco in 1864, and was employed around 1880, originally with the South Pacific Coast Narrow Gauge Service. He served as captain on numerous ferry steamers, including ENCINAL, GARDEN CITY, OAKLAND, BAY CITY, PIEDMONT, and NEWARK. Captain Leale retired in 1914 after 36 years of continuous service aboard ferry steamers in San Francisco Bay. He died in San Francisco on December 31, 1932. An older brother, William G. Leale, also served as a ship captain aboard vessels in San Francisco Bay. Researchers should review Captain John Leale's autobiography titled Recollections of a Tule Sailor.
