Background
- Scope and content:
-
The materials in this collection includes bound volumes of historical publications published by the hospital from when it was known as the Baby Hospital in the early 1900s, as well as the later publication, the Bambino, a monthly newsletter. The bulk of the materials came from the Marketing and Communications Department and consist of photos, contact sheets, informational and promotional brochures, press clippings and related materials that range from the 1970s up to the early 2010s.
- Biographical / historical:
-
In 1912, a group of women led by Alameda County Nurse, Bertha Wright and social worker, Miss Mabel Weed founded the Baby Hospital. Funds were raised to acquire the McElrath estate, previous residence of a prominant Oakland family, and turn it into a hospital. Equipped with 38 beds, the Baby Hospital officially opened in 1914. Additional programs and wings were added over time, and in 1959, with the addition of a research center, the hospital came to be known as the Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland. In 2014, Children's Hospital Oakland affiliated with UCSF. In honor of a generous gift to the hospital from Marc Benioff, founder, chairman and CEO of SalesForce.com and his wife Lynne Krilich, the Children's Hospital Oakland was renamed as UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.
