The James R. Sams Field Notes, 1959 include diary entries for a collecting trip to Sonora, Mexico (March 30-April 19, 1959), a bird list and a serial field catalogue.

Biographical / historical:

James R. Sams was an amateur naturalist and staff member of the San Diego Natural History Museum in the 1950s. Born on September 2, 1929 in San Diego, Sams was a member of "The Specialists" club, a group of young naturalists mentored by entomologist Charles F. Harbison. He attended San Diego State University and conducted nature walks with the Museum before joining the Education Department in 1951. He became the Museum's Director of Public Relations in 1958 and subsequently worked in public relations for an environmental organization and the publication Oceans. In the 1960s, he hosted a local public service program, "Science and You," on local television station KOGO-TV.
