Background
- Scope and content:
-
Four of these eight albumen prints are studio portraits of indigenous people in elaborate dress. There is one portrait of a woman in billowing pantaloons and a long veil that covers her head and body, leaving only her eyes and forehead (decorated with a jeweled headband) showing. In a second portrait the woman has lifted the veil to reveal another veil underneath it, one covering her nose, mouth, chin and neck. Her elegant lace blouse and shining bracelets are also visible. The two other portraits are of men wearing turbans, sashes, and shawls. These portraits are apparently the work of a single unidentified photographer.
Four photographs are of tourist destinations such as the city of Constantine (by Jean Geiser), the Hotel d'Orient in Algiers (by C. Portier), the interior of the Mosque of Sidi Bou Médine in Tlemcen (by Neurdein frères), and the racetrack at Beni Mora.
Titles are as they appear in the negative, on the verso, or on the mount, as noted.
ArrangementNo discernible original order; arranged by cataloger.
