Book entitled "Monterey Peninsula People" (c1998) with photographs from the book, text, and a few extra photographs. MMA exhibition entitled Peninsula People: Portraits by John McCleary January 18-April 20, 1997. 6 postcards featuring McCleary's photos.

Biographical / historical:

John Bassett McCleary (194?-xxxx) is a Monterey-area professional photographer. He was born in San Francisco, California, and is a third-generation journalist. He attended Monterey Peninsula College, Santa Barbara City College, and UCLA. He has worked as a writer, art director, and photographer in the newspaper, music, publishing and advertising industries for the last thirty-seven years. McCleary was present at the Monterey Pop Festival and was a music industry photographer in Los Angeles in the 1960s and 70s; he was on stage and in the dressing rooms with The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Stones, Tina Turner, and others. In the early 1970s, he produced a series of twelve posters and "The Peopleโ€™s Book," a photographic book of the counterculture, "The Hippie Dictionary," and several other books. From August 1994-December 1996 the Monterey Herald newspaper featured photographs and short articles on local people by McCleary. Between January 18-April 20, 1997 the photographs were exhibited at Monterey Museum of Art as Peninsula People: Portraits by John McCleary.
