Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains photographs (clergy and church members), newspaper clippings, historical documents, church advertisements, and ministry documents. The collection features detailed accounts of the Joy Bus Ministry as well as the mission trips.

Biographical / historical:

The Central Church of Christ was built in 1922 in Stockton, California. Almost eighty years prior in Stockton, Thomas Thompson succeeded in planting the first church of Christ in California in 1851, which at the time consisted of 21 members meeting in a home at San Joaquin and Weber. With the help of J.D. Powers, the first Church of Christ building, the Central Church of Christ, was created (The church may have been assisted financially by George Pepperdine's Western Auto Store). With time, the church's property expanded to fit the growing congregation. Many programs were created to serve both the congregation and surrounding community, including the Joy Bus Ministry, Police Chaplains, missions to Ethiopia, Cambodia, Mexico, and Texas. The Central Church of Christ is also very connected with the Sierra Children's Home and Sierra Christian School, where congregation members frequently volunteered.

Pepperdine University has a few connections with the members of the Central Church of Christ. For example, when George Pepperdine College opened in 1937, the dedication ceremony included G.C. Brewer, a minister of the Central Church of Christ, who led the invocation. Also, President Baxter was known to have preached at the Central Church of Christ.
