Background

Scope and content:

Collection includes meeting minutes, bylaws, articles of incorporation, site dedication information, newsletters, photographs, and invitations created by and about the Rancho de los Palos Verdes Historical Society.

Biographical / historical:

The Rancho de los Palos Verdes Historical Society was originally founded and incorporated in 1976 and had its first formal meeting in 1977. The group was created to preserve and perpetuate the history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Society was named for the Spanish land grant which encompassed the area. Each year from 1977 to 1991, the Society dedicated bronze plaques at historical sites on the Peninsula, including the Gardner Building, Point Vicente Lighthouse, and La Venta Inn. The group also released quarterly newsletters with information about other events and programs put on by the Society.

In 1992, the Society's focus expanded and the articles of incorporation were amended to include the new mission of creating a museum to house memorabilia, artifacts, and original historic documents pertaining to the original Rancho. The Society ran the museum in the tower of the Malaga Cove School from March 25th, 1994 until it was closed by the School District to use as an administrative center in 2006. The group officially dissolved in 2006 but was reincorporated as the Palos Verdes Historical Society (PVHS) in 2014. The PVHS is committed to preserving the heritage of Palos Verdes and finding a permanent site for a museum dedicated to said heritage.
