Scope and content:

The collection contains materials related to Camarillo's Chicanos in a Changing Society: From Mexican Pueblos to American Barrios in Santa Barbara and Southern California, 1848-1930. Materials include historical newspaper clippings, interview agreement forms, publisher correspondence, and black and white photographs of Mexican American communities throughout California.

Also included are 23 open reels of audio-recorded interviews, all recorded in Santa Barbara, California mostly between August and September 1974. The recordings are interviews that Albert Camarillo conducted in 1974 with local Mexican American residents of Santa Barbara as part of the research for his doctoral dissertation, "The Making of a Chicano Community: A History of Chicanos in Santa Barbara, California, 1850-1930" (UCLA 1975) and later used for his first book, Chicanos in a Changing Society: From Mexican Pueblos to American Barrios in Santa Barbara and Southern California, 1848-1930.

Biographical / historical:

Albert Michael Camarillo (February 9, 1948 - ) is an American historian, author and professor regarded as a founding scholar of Mexican American history and Chicano Studies. Born and raised in Compton, California, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), earning both a bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in History in 1970 and 1975 respectively.

While working on his Ph.D. at UCLA, Camarillo was a lecturer in UC Santa Barbara's History and Chicano Studies departments from 1971–72. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1975, he took a position as an assistant professor of history at Stanford University, where he has stayed for the remainder of his teaching career. Camarillo has served in numerous academic and administrative capacities throughout his time at Stanford. Starting in 1980, he served as the founding director of the Stanford Center for Chicano Research until 1985, as the founding executive director of the inter-university program in Latino research from 1985 to 1988, was named the Mellon Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies in 1991, was appointed as Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences, served as founding director of the Center of Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE) and chair of the CSRE undergraduate degree program in 1996, as the Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor in Public Service from 2002 to 2010, and was appointed in 2011 as the Leon Sloss Jr. Memorial Professor, the endowed professorship he held until his retirement in 2017. He continues to serves as a Professor Emeritus in the department of history, and holds a courtesy appointment as a professor in the graduate school of education.

Throughout his career, Camarillo has published seven books and dozens of articles and essays on the experiences of Mexican Americans and other racial and immigrant groups in American cities.
