The correspondence includes multiple generations of men, women, and children of the Leigh family, their extended families, friends, business and political associates. The research material was compiled by Gwen Beachcroft in the 20th century and includes indexes, transcriptions, correspondence, photocopies, and family trees.

The Leigh family, descended from Sir Thomas Leigh, Lord Mayor of London for Queen Elizabeth I, were a long-established family in Adlestrop in Gloucestershire. They were connected by marriage to many other wealthy families in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, including the Dukes of Chandos and the Austens; the Leighs of Adlestrop were Jane Austen's maternal relatives.

The collection was owned by Helen Roach, a descendant of the Beachcroft family, who were descendants of the Leigh family. The collection had previously been on deposit at the Bodleian Library since the 1970s and was removed by Helen Roach in the 2010s.
