Biographical / historical:

The College of Letters and Science was formed in 1951, with a number of departments already existing from the early years of University Farm. The College's first official departments were Botany, Chemistry, Zoology, English, and History and it soon expanded with population growth and a broadening post-war global economy. In 1951, founding dean Lawrence Andrews welcomed 74 students. By 2001, L&S was made up of over 10,000 students enrolled in 52 departments.

New programs and departments continued to be created over the next two decades including the Communication M.A. program (2006), Department of Asian American Studies (2009), and the Institute for Psychedelics and Neurotherapeutics (2023). Dean Estella Atekwana, a renowned geophysicist, was appointed in 2021 and is admired as a visionary leader.
