    Abstract: Rosalie Blau made many important contributions to the field of childhood education, and was a member of the California Association for the Education of Young Children until 1955. The Rosalie M. Blau Collection documents her personal involvement in the field of childhood education between the years 1932 to 1986, and includes articles, correspondence, minutes, notes, reports, research notes, and resumes.

    Biographical Information:

    Rosalie Blau was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on August 12, 1905. In 1922, she moved to Los Angeles. She married Samuel Blau in 1924, with whom she had two children, Jacqueline and Lawrence.
    In 1932 she became active in nursery school education and enrolled at Los Angeles City College. She received a B.A. in Education and Early Childhood Education from California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) in 1950, and an M.A. in Administration, Early Childhood Education from CSULA in 1953.
    Blau was actively involved in many child-focused organizations. From 1941-1945, she was a member of the Association for Nursery Education Southern California (ANESC), Association for Childhood Education, Southern California (ACESC), and National Association for Nursery Education (NANE). During 1945-1947, she was the President for ANESC; representative to the ACE,SC Board for the Nursery Education Branch, 1947-1949; Chair, Legislation Committee, APESC, 1949-1950; Chair, Public Relations and Legislation, APESC, 1953-1954; Chair, Public Relations, APESC, 1967-1972; Consultant, Metropolitan Chapter, Southern California Association Education Young Children (SCAEYC), 1970-1972; Consultant, North Bay Chapter, SCAEYC, 1976; Chair, Membership Committee, North Bay Chapter, SCAEYC, 1977-1983; Historian, North Bay Chapter, SCAEYC, and Historian, SCAEYC. In 1983 she was appointed State Historian, California Association Education for Young Children.

    Scope and Contents

    The Rosalie M. Blau Collection documents her personal involvement in the field of childhood education, between the years 1932 to 1986. The collection also includes material from the California Association for the Education of Young Children up to 1955. The material included in the collection consists of articles, correspondence minutes, personal notes, reports, research notes and resumes. The collection is divided into three major series: Biographical Files (1931-1986), Research Files (1921-1987), and General Printed Matter (1932-1984).
    Series I, Biographical Files, contain biographical information pertaining to Blau's life and career. It portrays her various activities within the field of childhood education. Correspondence, master's thesis, personal writings, reports, research notes and resumes are included in this series. The files are arranged in chronological order.
    Series II, Research Files, consists of two subseries: Childhood Agencies and Associations (1921-1987), and Important Personalities (1948-1986). Childhood Agencies and Associations documents many of the various associations and agencies focused on the education and well-being of children. Included are bulletins, minutes, newsletters, programs and reports. The files are arranged in alphabetical order. Important Personalities documents many of the people who made important contributions to the field of childhood education. Included are articles, biographical data, letters, obituaries, reports, and resumes. The files are arranged in alphabetical order.
    Series III, General Printed Matter, is comprised of various subjects which pertain to childhood education. Included are articles, books, bulletins, newsletters, pamphlets, papers and reports. The files are arranged in alphabetical order, according to author or title.
