Terry Dale Milne was a writer and staunch Bernal Heights neighborhood advocate. Known to his neighbors as "Mr. Bernal Heights," he began his advocacy work on improving the Precita Park playground. He also worked on tree preservation and was appointed to the San Francisco Urban Forestry Council by Mayor Gavin Newsom. Milne had a degree in architecture but turned to writing and cartography. He cofounded the Bernal History Project that documented the history of the neighborhood and its residents, and contributed to the group's history book. Milne died in 2023, survived by his wife, Mary DeYoe.
The "Hearts in San Francisco" project debuted in 2004, with 131 heart sculptures on display throughout the city. After three months, they were auctioned to raise nearly 3 million dollars for the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Since then a new set of hearts has been commissioned and auctioned each year.
