Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Garip Sultan papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes, memoranda, transcripts of radio broadcasts and related materials, and printed matter pertaining to Sultan's long career at Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). The bulk of the material is contained in the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty series and focuses on the history of RFE/RL and the effectiveness of its programs. The inclusion of a substantial number of sound recordings complements the series. Also of importance are documents in the Subject File relating to Sultan's activities in the Tatar nationalists' efforts to reestablish an Idel-Ural state independent from the Russian Federation.
