Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection consists of legal documents from two cases in the 1990s. One is a lengthy set of handwritten letters and filings from a man named Ali Shair or Shair Ali, who had been arrested on drug charges and was jailed in the West County Detention Facility. He wrote in his complaint that he had been denied legal representation and wanted his charges dismissed. The second case is Marina Center v. City of Richmond, in which the developers of the proposed Marina Center sought a preliminary injunction against the City of Richmond. The developers claimed the City was improperly restricting the type of development they could build on the property, and they sought legal relief from these restrictions. These were among numerous documents donated to us in 2011 by the now-defunct West County Times newspaper.
