Scope and content:

The collection contains John Greenleaf Whittier manuscript poems, letters and printed material, including portraits. The poems include: "An Acrostic for Lois Jones," "The Stars," "What the Birds Said," "Divine Compassion," "The Quaker Meeting," "The Last Eve of Summer," "Between the Gates," and "Esther Gyle's Ride," among others. The correspondence includes letters by Whittier to James T. Fields and Lucy Larcom. Also included are three folders of manuscripts by Samuel Thomas Pickard from his writings on Whittier: "Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier" and "Whittier's Sense of Humor."

Biographical / historical:

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the Fireside poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings, as well as his 1866 book Snow-Bound.
