Materials documenting history and activities of the Gold-Headed Cane Society at UCSF. Correspondence, speeches, manuals, UCSF commencement programs, membership lists, dues records, reports, photographs, bio sketches, publications, commencement brochures.

Biographical / historical:

Initiated in 1939 by William J. Kerr, MD, then Professor and Chairman of the UCSF Department of Medicine, the Gold-Headed Cane Society has recognized UCSF medical students from each class who exemplify the qualities of a "true physician" with an annual award. New members are inducted at commencement, and one is presented a Gold-Headed Cane by a senior member of the society.

Acquisition information:
This collection was transferred to the archives in 2014 by the Office of the Dean, UCSF School of Medicine. Additional materials were transferred by Oriol Zales, UCSF SOM Dean's Office, Academic Affairs in 2020.

Access and use

Restrictions:

Collection is open for research. The UCSF Archives and Special Collections policy places access restrictions on material with privacy issues for a specific time period from the date of creation. Access to records that contain personal and confidential information about an individual or individuals is restricted for 75 years from date of creation or until the death of the individual mentioned in the records, whichever is longer. Access to medical records is restricted for 100 years from the latest date of the materials in those files. Restrictions are noted at the series level. This collection will be reviewed for sensitive content upon request. Contact the UCSF Archivist for information on access to these files.
