Ralph C. Dailard (1907-1991) was the San Diego Superintendent of School from 1954 through 1968. Before his promotion he had worked as the associate superintendent, having joined local school system in 1939, as an administrative assistant and business manager. His promotion was notable as first superintendent promoted from within the system. His tenure was characterized by an exponential growth in student body, number of schools, employees, and increase in the budget. Other demands on the district included the effects of federal law in education, addressing impact aid, desegregation, and school lunches. Other issues involved citizenship education to combat communism and the changing demands of technology and the knowledge economy.

The collection is a mixed materials assortment of awards, velo-bound books, correspondence, ephemera, news clippings, overhead transparencies, and photographs. The majority of the material is clustered around his promotion in 1954 to the position of Superintendent and his retirement early in 1969. Ralph C.
