    Biographical / Historical

In 1938, Cal Poly Pomona, then known as California Polytechnic School, Voorhis Unit, was established in San Dimas, California as a satellite campus for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The first Poly Vue occurred in April of 1939 with the objective of introducing the public and families of students to the new campus. The event was modeled after the Poly Royal event at the San Luis Obispo campus, which in turn had grown out of livestock exhibitions. Administrative responsibility for the event varied over the years. The Poly Vue was often organized by a student committee, but some years it was administered by university faculty and staff.
Generally, Poly Vue was held over a two- to three- day period and included an array of events ranging from concerts, soapbox races, athletic competitions, talent shows, rodeos, and horse shows, in addition to exhibits and displays from various academic department and clubs. Also included was the Poly Vue Queen contest. Since Cal Poly Pomona was an all-male campus until 1961, candidates for Poly Vue Queen in the early years were selected from neighboring coed and all-female schools.
The Poly Vue was suspended from 1943 to 1946 because so many students had been drafted during World War II that the Voorhis Campus had to close. The Poly Vue resumed in 1947, was suspended one last time in 1970 due to general unrest on college campuses over the Vietnam War. The Poly Vue resumed in 1971. In 1992 Poly Vue celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and in 1993 the last Poly Vue was held.
