The collection contains academic and professional materials related to Thomas Scheff's research and writing. A majority of materials focus on his research into mental health, but research on restorative justice and other topics are also included.

Thomas Joel Scheff (August 1, 1929- ) is an American sociologist and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara. His areas of focus include the emotional/relational world, mental illness, restorative justice, and collective violence. He has written extensively throughout his career, publishing over 150 journal articles and 12 books.
Scheff earned a BS in Physics from the University of Arizona in 1950, going on to earn a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1960. Upon graduating, he was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin from 1960 to 1964, after which he joined the faculty at UC Santa Barbara in 1965 as Professor of Sociology, where he remains today as a Professor Emeritus. Alongside teaching, he also served as the former Section on the Sociology of Emotions Chair of the ASA, and as the former President of the Pacific Sociological Association.
In addition to his teaching appointments at the University of Wisconsin and UC Santa Barbara, he has held visiting appointments at Carleton University in Canada, Oslo University in Norway, and the Lund and Karlstad Universities in Sweden. He has been honored with several Lifetime Achievement Awards for his work with the American Sociological Association (ASA) in the early 2000s, various UC Santa Barbara and UC-wide service awards since his appointment in 1965, and was appointed as a part of the Task Force for Self Esteem by State of California in the late 1980s. In 2003 and 2008 respectively, Scheff received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Karlstad in Sweden, and Copenhagen University in Denmark.
