The Records of the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office collection consists of 65 bound ledgers containing jail registers, meal records, fee registers, and register of action. The records reflect the years of 1869-1959 and in many cases contain the names of the arresting officers, the accused, the plaintiffs, and judges. Records also reflect sentencing as assigned by the court. Some items may be restricted.

San Luis Obispo County was established on February 18, 1850 by legislative act and California was admitted to the United States later that year. Henry J. Dalley was the first county sheriff elected to serve the county with a population of approximately 300 residents.
