Biographical / historical:

The California GED Academy was originated by the California Department of Education in the mid-1980's as an in-service and networking opportunity for GED teachers working in adult education programs. Its purpose was to improve student learning and to build a peer support system among GED teachers. The first academies were held in six geographic regions and consisted of four half-day sessions, two weeks apart. There were several sessions a year. The GED Academy concept was successful and continued in various formats for over twenty years. The California Council for Adult Education (CCAE), a professional organization, took over the sponsorship of the Academy. The Academy was particularly active when the GED test was periodically updated, requiring modification in teaching techniques.
