Background
- Scope and content:
-
This artifical collection consists of three almanacs from the 1890s, one in English and one in French from the Dr. J. C. Ayer and Company; and one (in English) from the "Dr. J .H. McLean Medicine Company." The latter was probably not a doctor, but a druggist, who dispensed liniments and medicines and who died in 1886. Ayer (1818-1878) was a doctor and druggist, who developed many medicines, usually publicized in his almanac, published in numerous languages.
The almanacs in this collection contain information on the weather, lunar tables, orbits of planets, and other astronomical information. More importantly, the almanacs stand an interesting souce on late nineteenth-century popular medicine and understandings of health. Intended to sell medicine, the almanacs describe various medicines and their effect on maladies ranging from scrofula, to consumption (tuberculosis), to ague (malaria). The almanacs provide great detail on the etiology of such afflictions, and their cures and cares, often with great detail on how maladies affect men and women differently.
