Background

Scope and content:

The collection is comprised solely of correspondence, the vast majority of which was written by Margaret Deland to her first cousin, Madeleine Romaine Wade Poindexter. The only other author represented in the collection is American writer Alice Wellington Rollins (1847-1897) who also wrote letters to Poindexter. Issues discussed within the correspondence include nineteenth century authors and their works, the status of women in religious life, female suffrage and women's rights, United States politics and government, and Deland's personal life.

Biographical / historical:

Margaret Wade Campbell Deland (1857-1945) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet. A member of Boston's intellectual circles, Deland was also interested in issues of the period such as spiritualism and the rights of women. During the first World War, Deland participated in the relief effort in France for which she was awarded the Legion of Honor Cross. She was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1926. Deland's last major work was her autobiography, Golden Yesterdays, which she published in 1941 at the age of eighty-four.
